Surviving the Crushing Cost of Living: How I Overcame Job Loss and Bounced Back

For the past five years I have been best known for helping professionals master financial security so that they can achieve their life goals.

I coached through the financially crushing impacts of Covid on self-employed and small businesses. I supported hundreds of individuals through the cost of living crisis. And then, when I least expected it, lost my own job.

If you’ve ever lost a job (especially one you’re passionate about) you will know how it can knock your confidence. But it also causes financial strain which can propel even more anxiety, especially at a time when living costs are rising. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) recently reported unemployment rates are on the rise (3.8%), yet vacancies are falling and stock markets are continuing to prosper.

Moving on from job loss takes time, but through my own journey I have learned that in the face of adversity being successful comes down to your ability to be mentally and financially resilient, have radical acceptance, and drive to move forward.

When looking for a new job or career transition it’s important to research not only the company and its values, but also how the salary compares to the average income in your industry or role.

A period of introspection is important before switching careers, asking prospective employers what the career progression prospects are, and knowing your worth is an important cornerstone in negotiating to ensure you’re not leaving money on the table. If job roles are offering less than fair wages, consider upskilling to improve your chances of success.
